Thanks Gill, that’s just what I needed to read, have been fretting a bit myself about my son not wanting to read books and just enjoying being read to. I know he is working out words in his head and he is getting there . I even panicked and stuck a Jolly Phonics poster up this weekend which only managed to confuse everyone in the house who can read

Just echoing what Allie said really – I often feel that visits to places like this have been a waste of time and money, but then a few days/weeks/months later something will come out that I have no idea how it got in, IYSWIM?

Thanks for that reminder – when I think back now to when the older three were that age, I know what you mean.

I have found that my children do take in things around them at such places, though they might not ask the questions there and then. Sometimes they refer to something weeks, months or years later, often when thinking about something quite different!

you’re so right – I’ve read that Gatto piece too I think. What I’ve experienced and read, and confirmed here for me by your post – is that, as ever, all children are different and (therefore) it’s worth trying different methods/styles until/unless they find/state the one that works for them and they’re comfortable with.

Interestingly, I taught myself to read with Peter & Janes before I ever got to school, and LOVED them – we had lots with the orginal illustrations. I’ve seen the Biff & Chips ones (from when my two eldest were in school for a bit) and was supremely unimpressed – I thought the stories dull and badly written and constructed, the illustrations AWFUL and the whole things UGLY!

Wig’s trotting along on the DK star wars readers at the mo, he loves them!

Always glad to give reassurance!

I’m with the Continuum Concept as regards ‘too much focused attention not necessarily being a good thing’ – not that I’ve actually read the blooming book yet! (Must add it to ‘blooming books to finally get around to reading’ list..)

That’s so reassuring to read

About a million times a day I think: “ooh I should have followed that lead that Adan/Molly started, but I was too preoccupied with something else.”

(call social services alert, obviously)

But yes, innit great? Adan, yesterday, was looking at slices of bread: “two halves make a whole, don’t they?” and then, a second later, “and there are two quarters in a half,” closely followed by, “and four quarters in a whole.”

I didn’t go anywhere with it cos I was starving and wanting my lunch but now I’m glad I didn’t and have the perfect excuse for continuing on in my general preoccupied half-listening state.

The Inventions book arrived!
Got it second hand but in good condition from Amazon, very cheaply-well worth the money!

Am pleased, it was unwrapped and used immeadiately.
